Between the ownerships of Col Northey and Mr Jack Fudge, it had been used for various businesses, the last a tailor's shop. The house had been built for a Lt.Col Northey in 1832 before the coming of the railway and before the London road was built. This is borne out by the records which show Mrs Sarah Fudge, his widow, as sub postmistress in charge of Box Post Office in 1885.īetween 18 Mrs Sarah Fudge acquired the present post office building including the land stretching all the way up to the railway line. According to family memory James Fudge died young. In 1871 he is described as Draper and Assistant Overseer. Mr Fudge appears to have had a draper's shop in the Market Place next to Bence's, or it may have been the precursor of Bence's. Some few years later, a linen draper in Box, called Mr John (often known as James) Fudge, took over the Post Office from Mr Charles Hardy, who had been the postmaster for the previous 20 years. In 1865 Box Post Office was authorised to handle money orders and Post Office Savings Bank business and in 1875 it had its own telegraph office. ![]() It is not known when the first Post Office was established in Box, but it is on record that in 1814 Box was No.9 in the Bath penny post deliveries and in 1824, it became No.9 in the Chippenham penny post. Date stamps were then developed to cancel the postage stamps so they could not be used again. A Dundee bookseller, James Chalmers, suggested little gummed slips of paper to show that the letter had been paid for - and the postage stamp was born. Led by the great reformer Rowland Hill, a uniform charge for letters depending on weight and paid for by the sender was introduced. Mail was first carried by the new railways in 1830 and the next fifteen years saw a dramatic change in the postal system. The Bath Road was well maintained and the journey to London took only 16 hours. When the post horn was heard, all other traffic was set aside, the toll gates were thrown open and the mail coach sped through, often at full gallop. The mail coaches had an armed guard and had free transit through the toll gates. By 1812 it cost 13 pence to send a letter from London to Edinburgh, despite the use of special Mail Coaches, introduced by John Palmer of Bath in 1784. The penny post was paid in advance and in those days a penny was a lot of money. This consisted of a charge of one penny for local deliveries and was added to the general post charges for letters from other towns. There were no deliveries to specific addresses until William Dockwra introduced the local penny post in 1680 in London. The sheet was then folded and fastened with sealing wax. As the charge was per sheet, writers usually wrote on three sides of a folded page and addressed it on the fourth side. The cost of postage was high and it was usually the recipient who was asked to pay. But it was not until 1635 in Great Britain that the Royal Mail was made available for private letters. ![]() Here in England during the middle ages, special tradesmen were stationed at posts about twenty miles apart along a few important routes to carry messages in relays. The Roman Empire had a postal service called the Cursus Publicus, but it was reserved for government use.

![]() ![]() While Vox had been founded with prominent journalists, Vox Media CEO Jim Bankoff said that their brands had mature, mainstream audiences that no longer relied on personalities. In late 2020, Klein, Williams, and Yglesias left the site. In September 2017, Klein published a post on Vox announcing that he was taking on a new role as editor-at-large, and that Lauren Williams, who joined Vox a few months after its founding, was the new editor-in-chief. Elizabeth Plank was hired in 2016 as a political correspondent, and in 2017 launched her own series with Vox Media, called Divided States of Women. In June 2016, Vox suspended contributor Emmett Rensin for a series of tweets calling for anti-Trump riots, including one on June 3, 2016, that urged, "If Trump comes to your town, start a riot." The tweets drew attention after violent anti-Trump protests took place in San Jose, California, on the day of Rensin's tweet. Klein's opening editorial essay, "How politics makes us stupid", explained his distress about political polarization in the context of Yale Law School professor Dan Kahan's theories on how people protect themselves from information that conflicts with their core beliefs. Vox was launched on April 6, 2014, with Klein serving as editor-in-chief. The new site's 20-person staff was chosen for their expertise in topic areas and included Slate 's Matthew Yglesias, Melissa Bell, and Klein's colleagues from The Washington Post. Klein expected to "improve the technology of news" and build an online platform better equipped for making news understandable. From his new position, Klein worked towards establishing Vox, including hiring new journalists for the site. He described Vox Media as "a technology company that produces media" rather than its inverse, associated with "Old Media". The New York Times ' David Carr associated Klein's exit for Vox with other "big-name journalists" leaving newspapers for digital start-ups, such as Walter Mossberg and Kara Swisher (of Recode, which was later acquired by and integrated into Vox), David Pogue, and Nate Silver. When Klein attempted to launch a new site using funding from the newspaper's editors, his proposal was turned down and Klein subsequently left The Washington Post for a position with Vox Media, another communications company, in January 2014. Prior to founding Vox, Ezra Klein worked for The Washington Post as the head of Wonkblog, a public policy blog. Vox has been described as left-of-center and progressive. Vox's media presence also includes a YouTube channel, several podcasts, and a show presented on Netflix. The website was founded in April 2014 by Ezra Klein, Matt Yglesias, and Melissa Bell, and is noted for its concept of explanatory journalism. In the Black Hills forest near Burkittsville, Maryland, many children had vanished in the 1940s and people still avoid going too deep into the woods. Heather Donahue, Michael Williams and Joshua Leonard, student filmmakers, set out to shoot a documentary about the Blair Witch. Her body was later discovered frozen to a rock in the forest. Sometime in the winter of 1697, Dyer was accused of witchcraft, tried, and subsequently banished from Leonardtown, Maryland. Īccording to Ben Rock, the man who created the backstory for Haxan, he took inspiration from the real Maryland legend of the woman Moll Dyer. The mockumentary presents the legend as real, complete with manufactured newspaper articles, newsreels, television news reports, and staged interviews in an attempt to convince viewers of its legitimacy. According to the legend, residents always blame these occurrences on the ghost of Elly Kedward (also a fictitious person), a Blair resident executed in 1785 by exposure for practicing witchcraft. The fictional tale describes the murders and disappearances of some of the residents of Blair, Maryland, the fictitious former name of Burkittsville, Maryland, from the 18th to the 20th century. Sanchez and Myrick also maintained a website at which added further details to the legend. This special spelling change only happens in the preterite tense and is not considered a stem changer. When the stem of the verb ends in a vowel, some spelling changes are necessary in certain forms in the preterite. Here are some common verbs that end in – zar, and they are conjugated like cruzar. Since the yo form has the ending – é, the z must change to c. For example, Table 3 shows the preterite conjugation of the verb cruzar (to cross). Whenever z is followed by e, it changes to c. This rule becomes important in the preterite tense because the verbs that end in – zar will change spelling in the yo form. Here are some common verbs that end in – car, and they are all conjugated like tocar. To simplify the rule: If a verb ends in – car, change c to qu in the yo form of the preterite. ![]() Table 2 is the preterite conjugation chart for the verb tocar (to play an instrument, to touch), which is an example for all regular – ar verbs in the preterite that end in – car. It is never pronounced like the English word queen. The resulting ending (– qué) is pronounced like the English name Kay. The combination of letters – qu is always pronounced like the English letter k, and you never say the u sound. So you must change the letter c to qu only in the yo preterite form. When you add – é to the base of a verb ending in – car, the c becomes a soft sound, which is unacceptable. This must be maintained in all the conjugated forms, but the preterite yo ending causes problems. It is pronounced hard when it's followed by – o, – a, or –u. Any verb that ends in – car will have the hard c sound in its infinitive form. The c is pronounced soft when it's followed by –i or – e. It has a hard sound (like the English letter k) and a soft sound (like the English letter s). The Spanish letter c is a lot like the letter g. All other preterite forms of these verbs are completely regular forms for a regular – ar verb in the preterite tense. Since they all end in – gar, you must change the g to gu in the yo form and then use the regular yo ending. The following verbs are all regular – ar verbs in the preterite tense. Note that the yo form would be pronounced. Table 1 is the preterite conjugation chart for the verb pagar (to pay) which serves as a good example. To simplify matters, remember that a verb ending in – gar will change g– to gu– in the yo form of the preterite. Whenever you see a verb ending in – gué, you can assume the u is only there to produce the correct hard g sound, and you don't pronounce the u. However, when you remove the – ar infinitive ending and add the yo preterite ending, the hard g is suddenly followed by – é and would be pronounced as a soft g. To maintain the hard g sound of the infinitive, the letter u is added between the g and é. This creates the hard g sound of the infinitive pronunciation. If a Spanish verb ends in – gar, the infinitive is pronounced with a hard gsound. ![]() Remember that the consonant g is pronounced hard (like the g in good) or soft (like the g in gym) depending on the vowel that follows the g. The spelling change is meant to maintain the same basic sound as the infinitive. This happens in the yo form of specific verbs in the preterite tense, because adding – í or – é to the base of the verb messes up the pronunciation of the word. The spelling and pronunciation rules of Spanish are extremely consistent, and sometimes a conjugated form of the verb must change its spelling to maintain the correct pronunciation. In addition to the United States, the Icare HOME tonometer has been granted sales permits in all European countries and in Australia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Brazil, Canada, and China. Being granted a marketing approval in the United States represents a major opportunity to bring the product to market and, in the future, establish it as a vital part of the glaucoma treatment process", says Timo Hildén, CEO of Revenio Group. For patients diagnosed with glaucoma, continuous IOP monitoring forms a key part of the treatment in order to contribute to preventing progression of the disease and to determine the proper medication. The resulting information on the patient's 24-hour intraocular pressure (IOP) fluctuation would help the doctor to make the proper treatment decisions. "One of our key goals is to create new treatment practices in which a doctor treating a glaucoma patient, or someone suspected of having glaucoma, can lend an Icare HOME tonometer to the patient for around-the-clock home measurement. Icare will immediately start preparations for launching the product in the United States. The company has now been informed that its PMA application has been accepted. In late November 2016, the company filed a supplemented Premarket Approval application to the United States Food and Drug Administration FDA. Revenio Group's subsidiary, Icare Finland Oy has received a marketing approval for the Icare HOME tonometer in the United States.
